UTR#20

richard: was at Unicode editorial committee meeting

Unicode in XML and Markup Languages

http://www.unicode.org/reports/tr20/

"somebody needs to updates it, but who?"

proposed that we refresh the document, fix refs to Unicode 6, fix links and typos

scribe: and it'll take longer for them to refresh it
... and then do substantive changes, such as bidi work

<scribe> ACTION: richard to locate the UTR#20 source materials [recorded in http://www.w3.org/2011/01/26-i18n-minutes.html#action01]

<trackbot> Created ACTION-12 - Locate the UTR#20 source materials [on Richard Ishida - due 2011-02-02].

richard: did my notes in a way that I can't read any more <g>

start with intro that says that guidelines exist at bottom; etc

richard: how are we going to publish: as note, article, or what?

http://www.w3.org/TR/timezone/

addison: as a Note

norbert: talk more about calendars, especially observational calendars
... need some reference to the calendar to handle observational calendar changes

addison: ready for wide review?

richard: will put comments directly into wiki
... will do this evening
... and then you can publish it directly after
... publish in wiki form
... restore references first

<scribe> ACTION: addison: publish time zone note draft in wiki form for wide review [recorded in http://www.w3.org/2011/01/26-i18n-minutes.html#action02]

<trackbot> Created ACTION-13 - Publish time zone note draft in wiki form for wide review [on Addison Phillips - due 2011-02-02].

AOB?

richard: mention that looking through email...
... and realized that a lot of i18n-related stuff going on in CSS
... ruby, vertical text, and other text related items
... may need to track
... just keep an eye on it

norbert: another list with lots of work is ECMAScript
... google and microsoft are very active

addison: not sure if FF or Opera are involved/aware

Widget P&C default locale

http://lists.w3.org/Archives/Public/public-i18n-core/2011JanMar/0014.html

> <widget xmlns = "http://www.w3.org/ns/widgets" > defaultlocale = "en-us">

<r12a-mac> <widget xmlns = "http://www.w3.org/ns/widgets"

<r12a-mac> > defaultlocale = "en-us">

<r12a-mac> >

<r12a-mac> > <name short="Weather" xml:lang="en-us">

<r12a-mac> > The Ultimate Weather Widget

<r12a-mac> > </name>

<r12a-mac> >

<r12a-mac> > <name short="Boletim" xml:lang="pt">

<r12a-mac> > Boletim Metereológico

<r12a-mac> > </name>

<r12a-mac> > </widget>

We agree that providing a default locale for a Widget is an oversight in the Widget's localization model. The ability to provide multiple languages in the configuration file or in the locales directory structure does not provide the Widget container with clear choice when the runtime language is not one of the languages provided. Part of this oversight may be due to an expectation that there would be a "default" set of resources present in the Widget. For ex

richard: "yes, much better than xml:lang"... but then also mention the file structures

<scribe> ACTION: addison: send revised email response proposal about Widgets P&C to list [recorded in http://www.w3.org/2011/01/26-i18n-minutes.html#action03]

<trackbot> Created ACTION-14 - Send revised email response proposal about Widgets P&C to list [on Addison Phillips - due 2011-02-02].
