From Points of Interest

I'm an independent consultant and industry analyst who evangelizes in various communities for greater adoption of real time, rich-media mobile services for consumers.

Non-W3C activity

Augmented Reality is a "space" in which I've been working since mid-2006, doing technology scouting, product and service roadmaps, technology transfer, business development and market development. My emphasis is on Mobile AR technologies/services and content for consumer applications, in particular applications which accelerate commerce, transactions and retail. More information about what I do http://www.perey.com

I am very active in ISMAR events, and attend and organize a variety of Summits and workshops.

In October 2010 I co-chaired the first meeting of standards organizations and consortia (and other interested parties) focusing on the topic of standards for AR.

With W3C

In January 2009, I chaired a W3C workshop about the Future of Social Networking and in the following months helped to start the W3C Social Web XG. I am/was an IE to the SWXG.

In fall of 2009, I co-authored a contribution on the topic of Social Web Frameworks.

In parallel with the Social Web activities I have been conducting workshops on issues which are preventing ubiquitous mobile AR. In June 2010 I co-chaired the W3C workshop on Augmented Reality and the Web.

I am an invited expert of the POI WG.

My objectives

I believe the objective is to have publishing for and "consuming" an AR user experience become as easy as publishing for user agents which are *NOT* built for placing/viewing information in context with the real world (e.g., iPad applications, Web browsers today).

That content which has one or more components which are viewable (or may be heard or felt) in association with/in the real world must be associated with triggers.

Geo-location tagged content almost fits in this category today. If/when the user's position (lat/long) and orientation are known, then content can be placed in context.

I would like to see the existing techniques for displaying information in context benefit from the deep examination which experts in a W3C WG can provide, and an open data format recommended.

I hope that a group such as the POI WG can codify the association between content and triggers and, on that basis, publish an open, efficient and extensible data format for content and triggers.
