I am working for a company which produces TV sets, related devices and services. But the company is no longer a member of W3C, so I would like to participate in the Workshop with interests of my own. As one of the editors of XHTML Basic, I have been interested in the area of "Web on TV," for more than 10 years, though I have not fully caught up with recent Web technologies. At the previous HTML WG (discussing XHTML 1.0, Basic, M12N, 1.1 and 2.0), I think this theme was realized as one of the very important things. As for the dispaly of contents, the requirements for TVs are not fully compatible with that of Web. For example, BML (which I was slightly related in standardization) based TVs were quite strongly required that all contents appropriately described in BML must be viewed "same," pixel by pixel, amongst them all. In March 2006, I participated in W3C Ubiquitous Web Workshop ( http://www.w3.org/2006/02/ubiwebws-agenda.html ) and made a presentation titled "Toward Ubiquitous Web Appliances." ( http://www.w3.org/2006/02/slides/matsui.pdf ) Even now, my thought and suggestions in this presentation has been basically still unchanged. TVs are the most important components, not only for displaying contents, but of "Ubiquitous Home Appliances" which will evolve to "Web Appliances" surrounding consumers. In Japan, almost all kinds of examples of "new services" described in the "Evolution of Web technologies" part of the Workshop Page are already realized and commercialized. But I think many of them have not gotten the "big success." My view point is to think about and to get some clue for the success of services in this area, through participating in the Workshop.
