Dear Sir/Madam I'm sending a format for W3C Workshop which will be held at Keio University. If you need further information on the subject, please let me know by Email. Expression of interest in participating in the Workshop ----------------------- Name, organization and contact details ----------------------- Name: Tatsuto Murayama and Takahiro Yamaguchi Organization: Research and Development Planning Department, NTT Corporation E-mail: {t.murayama, t.yamaguchi}@hco.ntt.co.jp ----------------------- Participant’s interest ----------------------- The potential windows for the digital publications (digital books, magazines, newspapers, etc.) vary in their size, display method, and interactivity. We now expect that digital publications would be really feature-rich so that they could be naturally viewed as an interactive page of the Web. In this point of view, we have following three interests about the W3C HTML5 WG. 1. Layout optimization with reflowable materials 2. Requirements for vertical writing/reading and ruby annotations 3. HTML5 widgets as containers for digital books -------------- Point of View -------------- 1. Layout optimization with reflowable materials --------------------- Texts, pictures, and other rich materials in HTML5 documents are designed to be reflowable, as is the case with current version of HTML4 and EPUB standard. However it seems very difficult to lay them out nicely and present quality pages for the readers looking at various types of windows, including TV displays. How do we strike a balance between reflowablity and quality in the final appearance? 2. Requirements for vertical writing/reading and ruby annotations ---------------------------------- Unlike other western and also Asian languages, Japanese documents have vertical writing/reading direction [1]. How do we arrange characters from top to bottom, and arrange lines from right to left? Likewise how do we manage ruby annotations [2]? Do we need to stick to these Japanese domestic issues? 3. HTML5 widgets as containers for digital books ------------------------------- In general, Japanese digital books are likely to be sold at the application marketplaces and are to be downloaded as stand-alone/self-contained applications. Likewise is it possible to use HTML5 widgets as containers for digital books? What options do we have to manage DRM issues if required?
