[dom]: would need a royaltee-free codec, already widely deployed in browsers

Dom, that issue reduces to the question of what is "a" codec (as opposed to the multiple union set of codecs in audio/wav); for a small memory footprint open source vocoder like Speex, what are the advantages to wide deployment over low bandwidth (unlike audio/ogg), free (unlike mp3), or well-specified (unlike audio/wav)?

A default audiovisual codec has not yet been specified either, but there
was recently some progress announced in the news on that topic:

[fjh]: hopefully codec will be defined by rtw

[dom]: rtw = Web RTC

[fjh]: discussed at F2F, agreed to not specify codec in DAP
