How to deal with this? Should we add the ref param in the media fragment URI? Should we consider a new attribute in the HTML5 media element?

Related notes:

Complex regions (either by reference or by value) is something that Media Fragments 2.0 should take care of (if such a WG is needed in the near future of course). The current SPEC only specifies & implements rectangular spatial regions.
