Upcoming announcements

<shawn> Shawn: - What questions, issues, and reactions do you think people might have with the announcement of WCAG 2.0 CR?

doyle: It's about to become law, and it moves things forward like we did WCAG 1.0

<shawn> sylvie via email: 4. As a regular Web site reviewer I wonder where I could find information on how to implement WCAG 2.0 in a site review. Will it stand in this implementation page?

<Liam> Most people I talk to would say, "What is a candidate reccommendation?" That is OK it gives a chance for explanation.

Shawn: Do you receive negative reactions?

Doyle: We've changed everything...

Jack: Given the time from it starts to where it is now, there will be turn over. In terms of jobs and roles.
... How familiar they are with that, a certain percent of the audience will be addressing this fresh.

Sharron: Many people will know how does this relate to 508 (TITAC) ... law, state agencies and government agencies.

Jack: What does the new standard mean in terms of the law.

Wayne: The rehabilitation act of 1973 is met better by WCAG 2.0 than 1999 508. There is a mapping from 508 to WCAG 2.0 Sufficient Techniques.

Doyle: They would like it because it is easier to read.

Jack: How long will it be until it gets to the next state.

WCAG 2 FAQ

Sharron: Why do we need "the guidelines are fairly short... 2.0 Documents are previously long"

When will WCAG 2.0 be done? What is the current status.

Sylvie: Isn't this a place to link to the explanation of the candidate reccomendation (internal link to an explanation further in the FAQ, or a link to the paragraph explaining what is a candidate recommendation in the How WAI Develops Accessibility Guidelines through the W3C Process: Milestones and Opportunities to Contribute page ?

Liam: Done is uniquely American... prefer finished or completed.

Shawn: Move the update higher and that emphasizes what's next and when we can expect it.
... How is WCAG 2.0 different from WCAG 1.0.

no change

When should we start using WCAG 2.0?

Sharron: NOW

Jack: Most is benefits and that is different from the question that is "when".

Sharron: Are you saying that we should split the question into When and Why?

Jack: Agree
... When should lawmakers take up WCAG 2.0

Overview of WCAG 2.0 Documents

Shawn: What changed: the last paragraph changed "candidate rec", Quick Reference changed to How to Meet WCAG 2.0,

<shawn> ACTION: Shawn, consider if we want to provide info about the differences between WCAG 1.0 priority 1 & 2, versus WCAG 2.0 level AA... [recorded in http://www.w3.org/2008/04/25-eo-minutes.html#action01]

Wayne: Need to look at WCAG 1.0 checkpoints vs. 2.0 levels: Failure to meet 1.0 checkpoints left people out or made their lives very difficult. The WCAG 2.0 Levels A+ are enhancements. Level A gives full accessibility.

<shawn> Shawn: check WCAG 2.0 about how that flies, and messaging around that (after CR ;)

WAI Highlights

WCAG 2.0 is on the move: ready for test-drives

Sylvie: 'test-drive' is not a common term in French...

WAI Outreach Material - Printed Materials

Doyle: 1g thumb drive... with WAI Doc

Sharron: Quick tips cards..

Doyle: Bookmarks

Jack: Screen saver of background

Doyle: a CD with specific documents... Introduction... Dazzling objects... Lovely picture of Shawn (and Doyle too ...)
... ATA gala thumb drives. very popular...

Shawn: What information do we need to convey? Trough printed material...

Jack: Samples and presentations; printed material How things were accessible how to make accessible. If I had something to walk away with.. show to the boss... in a form that I could pop into my computer.

Doyle: something for a cell phone..
... show how the document displays well on a a cell.

Jack: Great idea, blackberries,...

<shawn> wayne: iconic things, like the Components.

<shawn> ... page with that and brief explanation

<shawn> ... look at our slides on WAI

<shawn> ... or come up with some, like the relationship of the [WCAG 2.0] principles to the success criteria in an iconic way

If we are assigned to create a one page flyer for conference bags what would be on it?

<shawn> wayne: explain that this is not accessible, in terms of POUR

<shawn> [Shawn notes that of course all our printed material will be available in multiple accessible formats, including HTML]

Doyle: Electronic Ink: scan and read... Most common question.. one tool to make it accessible... here is a tool

Sharron: Why does it matter? ....

<shawn> wayne: agree

Sylvie: What is on the Web Site what WAI does...

Doyle: "What if you can't read this"

Sylvie: (continued)... Guidelines, WG, activities of WAI...

Doyle: Target to audience... education, government, business...

Jack: Instead of what if you cannot read it if we put in a percentage: 10% can read this.

<Jack> Or, maybe if you modify Doyle's statement to indicate a % that can't read it. Something like ' 10% of the people you want to read this, can't'

Doyle: Marketing electronic picture frames; e-ink, Make a board, attract a crowd.

Shawn: If you asked the common person at XYZ-tangentially-related-to-the-Web-conference: what is WAI?
... What would they say? Say in marketing issues and you asked "Web Accessibility Initiative"

Liam: "I don't know"...

Doyle: how people might connect...

Shawn: If they had heard a little, what might they say.

Doyle: Just knew a little... standards, you do sites,

Liam: Technical standard to maximize market reach.

Sharron: Accessibility is availability.
... for Community Technology...

<shawn> Wayne: when you approach people, they get defensive, for 2 reasons

<shawn> ... uncomfortable, don't want to appear as bigots

<shawn> ... 2nd, frightening 'cause technical.

<shawn> ... or if you are technical, don't want to admit that you don't know it

<shawn> ... when talk about accessibility, people clam up

Doyle: GPS talking devices: People might encounter Web Accessibility is through navigation devices.

<sharron> Liam: Would talk about market reach to a marketing conference and empowerment to a social networking conference.

Jack: Change in terms of more things making it possible, there is an aging population, people haven't thought of them in that, but it is having a more direct effect.

Doyle: Aging baby boomers...

Shawn: Next steps are to have Sharron write them up.... Pass around and narrow scope.

Impact from EO Deliverables Plan

Shawn: Lets have a wrap-up task force -- unfinished, still feel like priorities... Holding of on bring plan until we get input from WAI-AGE, to modify current deliverables to cover aging and create new docs to include aging and disability; rather than 2 discussions we could combine them.
... Update complete WAI-Lit-Review Questionnaire

<shawn> Survey: WAI-AGE Literature Review, First Public Working Draft

<shawn> http://lists.w3.org/Archives/Public/w3c-wai-eo/2008AprJun/0040.html

<shawn> survey: http://www.w3.org/2002/09/wbs/35532/literature-1st-draft/

Sharron: found it confusing [Sharron had trouble distinguishing between needs change, but accept change]

Shawn: Would like to publish a first public working draft, would like to remove any big problems.
... Mobile accessible working draft... content as finalized... plan an extended teleconference to wrap it up; any changes to EO Charter; next week more documents to review regarding WCAG 2.
... Adjourn...
