Benefit of sw is the ability to be able to more easily integrate silos of data.
This slide shows some bioinformatics data sources that I integrated with Siderean and Joanne.
The goal being that bioinformatics people can just ask the questions that they’re interested in, rather than needing to jump from web site to web site.
Integrating data with sw technologies has the benefit that people know what it is that you’re talking about, the architecture is flexible so it’s easier to re-use data in unexpected ways, and it’s a web based data integration platform.
Biology has become a science, where different people work on different components of the puzzle, so it’s important that the pieces can interconnect.
However, the real goal though is to be able to integrate data from bench to bedside.
