This is a text version of the questionnaire "Review of existing technologies related to device information usage" We recommend that you only use this review form if you are unable to use the online questionnaire, which is available at: http://www.w3.org/2002/09/wbs/1/ddwgld/ If you don't have a login and password for the W3C Site please follow instructions presented in the questionnaire introduction (http://www.w3.org/2005/MWI/DDWG/questionnaire.html ) If you choose to send in this questionnaire form instead of using the online questionnaire, please mail the completed form to member-ddwg@w3.org by 30 September 2005 at 23:59 Boston Time. Introduction ------------ This is a public questionnaire proposed by the W3C MWI Device Description Working Group (http://www.w3.org/2005/MWI/DDWG/). The mission of the MWI Device Description Working Group (DDWG) is to enable the development of globally accessible, sustainable data and services that provide device description information applicable to content adaptation. The results of this questionnaire will be used as input and material for the first deliverable of the group, a Landscape document (http://www.w3.org/2005/01/DDWGCharter/#firstyear ) as described in the charter of the WG (http://www.w3.org/2005/01/DDWGCharter/). All the answers will be disclosed only to the members of DDWG and to W3C Team. All the answers will be anonymized if cited in the document If you want to submit information about your technology to the W3C MWI DDWG as input for the W3C Recommendation Process (http://www.w3.org/2004/02/Process-20040205/tr.html#Reports ), you can follow any of the following options : - Send documents to the public mailing-list public-ddwg@w3.org - If you are W3C Member, join MWI DDWG and Send documents to the member restricted mailing-list member-ddwg@w3.org All information about this questionnaire is available at the questionnaire home page (http://www.w3.org/2005/MWI/DDWG/questionnaire.html ) Please note that answers sent after August 15 2005 may not be taken into account for the first draft of the landscape document For any question related to this questionnaire you can contact Stephane Boyera (boyera@w3.org) ===================== Questionnaire starts 1- Your Name --------------------------------- 2- Affiliation --------------------------------- 3- Name of device description technology or device description product ---- --------------------------------- 4- Status of technology ---- For example, indicate whether the technology is an open standard, a reference implementation or a proprietary technology. --------------------------------- 5- Context of the technology ---- Is the technology or product used for content adaptation? If not, what is its purpose? What is the target audience? Is it a standalone technology, or is it part of another product or platform? --------------------------------- 6- What markup languages does your product support? ---- * [ ] WML 1.x (WML) * [ ] WML 2.x (XHTML-MP) * [ ] iMode/cHTML * [ ] HTML (3.2 up) * [ ] XHTML * [ ] VoiceXml * [ ] Other W3C Markup (e.g. SVG, SMIL) (Fill the text area below) * [ ] Other non-W3C Markup (Newsml, ...) (Fill the text area below) * [ ] Proprietary content (Fill the text area below) --------------------------------- 7- What are input and output features supported by your product ? ---- Input * [ ] Touch screen (phone, PDA, "full" size) * [ ] Limited keys * [ ] Joystick/mouse (continuous pointer) * [ ] Full keyboard (on-screen, detachable, permanent) * [ ] Voice * [ ] Other (gravity sensor, barcode, etc - please explain) (Fill the text area below) Output * [ ] Text screen * [ ] Graphic screen (tiny, small, medium, large) * [ ] Multi screens * [ ] "heads-up screen" * [ ] Voice * [ ] Other (Fill the text area below) --------------------------------- 8- Description ---- If you can, please provide a brief architectural overview of the technology or product. --------------------------------- 9- Reliance or usage of existing standards ---- Please indicate how the device-description part of your technology or product builds (or relies upon) existing standards. For example: HTTP, XML, CC/PP, etc --------------------------------- 10- Does the technology specify, or provide, a repository (or repositories) for the storage of the device descriptions? ---- if you answer "yes", provide the following details: * a brief description of the data structure e.g. flat files, RDMBS, OODMS, hierarchical data structures * To what level of abstraction does the repository store the data? e.g. per model, per operator, per browser etc * How does the technology manage multiple revisions of the same device? (e.g. inheritance, fallback, etc) * How does the technology manage attributes or properties for unknown devices? (i.e. those not yet stored or those not recognised) * In your experience, how many discrete device descriptions do you believe are essential to produce satisfactory content adaptation worldwide? - < 10 - 10 - 50 - 50 - 100 - 100 - 200 - > 200 * ( ) Yes * ( ) No Comments (or a URI pointing to your comments): --------------------------------- 11- Vocabulary ---- Does the technology specify an explicit vocabulary of device attributes? if you answer "yes", please provide the following details: * a brief description of the vocabulary Is it extensible, typed, based on standard vocabularies, and so on * Which areas of a device's capabilities does it cover? These might include browser behaviour, markup compliance, physical characteristics, messaging clients, radio behaviour etc * In your experience, how many device attributes do you believe are essential to produce satisfactory content adaptation? - < 10 - 10 - 20 - 20 - 50 - > 50 * ( ) Yes * ( ) No Comments (or a URI pointing to your comments): --------------------------------- 12- Does the technology specify, or provide, a process or mechanism for the capture of attributes for a specific device? ---- If you answer "yes", please provide a brief description of the profiling process. Is it structured or ad-hoc, empirical (using a real device) or theoretical? Does it require a human to test the actual device? An active network connection? * ( ) Yes * ( ) No Comments (or a URI pointing to your comments): --------------------------------- 13- Does the technology specify, or provide, a technique for querying a repository to extract device descriptions? ---- If you answer "yes", please provide the following details : * a brief description of the query process e.g. DB queries, SPARQL, data is keyed or indexed * How can the technology export or provide device descriptions for the purposes of content adaptation? e.g. standalone XML files, text configuration files * Do you provide APIs for applications to access the data?
