Obtaining mapping information from the Web (e.g. LDML, XSLT <decimal-format>)
Delegating formatting to the Web (Web Services)
Abstracting the above two by using URIs (or IRIs!)
- Example invocation:
  http://www.example.org/HebrewCalendarFormatter?date=2002-03-24
- Potential result:
  <formated-date value='2002-03-24'>actual format goes here</date>
Implementation can use caching and can do mapping locally if it receives a structured description rather than the actual formatted date.
Limits: implicit assumptions about start/end time of date, long term stability (1000years,...)
