A Position Paper for Delivery Context Workshop (ACCESS) February 11, 2002; Toshihiko Yamakami ACCESS is a leading company for Post-PC open network infrastructure, particularly for embedded client devices. It provides TCP/IP and HTTP software for a wide variety of Post-PC platforms, e.g. cellular phone handsets, game consoles, digital TV, and STBs. ACCESS has been aware of content authoring support for Post-PC platforms since it provided a browser for TV in 1995. A significant part of client functions heavily depend on various working know-how of client side execution. Especially, it is critical in battery-driven information appliances. Color display, Java VM execution, and SSL executions are among those, which needs special attention to be implemented in battery-driven wireless devices. In addition, we have to keep an eye on the general trend on the information appliance implementation. One of the topics related to the delivery context is use of style sheets. W3C and WAP Forum recently made style sheet specification for a mobile device. The implementation of CSS in mobile handsets will give the guidance of how delivery context should be manipulated across the devices keeping in mind the fact that major part of Internet soon comes into reality in information appliances. Considering the development speed of embedded software these days, it is unavoidable that we should take into account the fact that more and more different information appliances would come into market. Delivery context should take a careful consideration about the emerging diversity in information appliances and the minimum set of the standards deployed in a wide range of information appliances. This divergence naturally leads to the two aspects to be considered: we have to accept more divergence every day, and the installed software cannot change easily in the embedded network software environment. We are happy to contribute to the requirements about the robust extensibility in embedded network software in the future.
