SMIL: Multimedia and device independency go hand in hand

• Device independency:
  employ the medium that works best for a specific device, e.g:
  • text on a PDA,
  • speech on a mobile phone,
  • video on a hi-end desktop.
• SMIL documents can automatically adapt to:
  • different devices
  • preferred media types
• SMIL authors can:
  • Provide text descriptions of all media objects, similar to HTML's <img> (alt, title, longdesc, etc.).
  • specify media objects in alternative formats in case the end-user device doesn't support a particular (proprietary) encoding.
  • specify the layout of media items relative to the dimensions of the player's viewport.
  • specify entirely different (i.e. device-specific) layout strategies.
