The new mobile Web training course launched last February was so well received (full course!) that we are announcing a new session before this summer. The "Mobile Web 2: Applications" online course will be 6 weeks long, from 11 June to 22 July 2012, and registration is now open.

Based on students' feedback, our trainer Marcos Caceres will teach an updated program which covers all the important aspects of mobile Web application development: basics of creating a Web application that runs on mobile devices, HTML5 elements and new CSS properties, powerful Javascript APIs and libraries, and finally how to make Web apps available off-line.

This course is also looking at device APIs (geolocation, device orientation, touch events) as well as looking at what new standards are coming from the W3C.

We encourage you to follow this course to learn how to develop open mobile Web apps with HTML5, accessible from any browser on any system. As Tim Berners-Lee urged conference participants in his last month WWW2012's keynote: “The solution is in your hands: develop Web apps, not apps!”

Learn how to mobilize your apps! Register for the new W3C online training course

We are pleased to announce that registration is open for a new edition of the W3C online training course “Mobile Web 2: Programming Web Applications”.

Developed by the W3C/MobiWebApp team and taught by Marcos Caceres, this course covers all techniques you need to know for programming successful mobile Web applications, including:

Progressive enhancement and feature detection
HTML5 for mobile
Javascript APIs for geolocation, device orientation, handling touch events, using local storage, accessing the camera
Taking applications offline

MobiWebApp collaborates with Mosquito project on mobile Web interoperability

MobiWebApp is collaborating with the Mosquito European project on a series of events three weeks from now, from May 29th to 31st in Paris.

The event combines a workshop on challenges around mobile Web with a set of presentations from a variety of perspectives on May 29, followed by an interoperability event on May 30th and 31st, where more than 40 mobile devices will be made availabe to participating developers to test their Web applications, and report the main interoperability difficulties they enounter.

As Mobile Web Initiative Activity Lead, and through my involvement in the European MobiWebApp project, I spent a lot of my time looking at what it takes to make the Web on mobile a strong platform for developing new applications and services.

The Web promises an interoperable platform across devices and operating systems; meanwhile, a regular issue that most Web developers face when targeting mobile devices is that support for a given set of features varies a lot from one device to another. The W3C CoreMob Community Group tries to reduce that difficulty by defining set of Web technologies that developers expect to find on mobile devices.

Three weeks from now, a series of event in Paris organized by the European Mosquito project in collaboration with MobiWebApp will bring its own contributions to the topic.

First, on May 29th, a single-day workshop will offer the perspectives of a variety of players on the current fragmentation challenges of the mobile Web, see what solutions are under consideration and possibly identify issues that need further attention.

Then, on May 30th and 31st, we will gather interested Web developers to explain the potential of HTML5 on mobile through a half-day training, followed by a day and a half of interoperability testing: with more than 40 mobile devices available, both old and recent, developers will be asked to test their applications and services on mobile devices, and identify the main interoperability issues they encounter in the process.

The 6-week course begins 30 April 2012.

The course will help Web designers and content producers who are already familiar with the desktop world to become familiar with the Web as delivered on mobile devices. It is based entirely on W3C standards, particularly the Mobile Web Best Practices.

Over the past few years, the availability of Open Web Platform technologies on mobile devices has done nothing but grow, to the point where it has become not only possible but in fact increasingly common to write full-fledged applications using Web technology.

In the same manner that integrating mobile-specific constraints and advantages into one's Web workflow required understanding a number of best practices, writing Web applications in a mobile context has its specificities that need to be understood.

It was therefore logical that after the resounding success of our W3C online training course series on "Mobile Web 1: Best Practices" we would follow with "Mobile Web 2: Applications".

Over an eight week time span, starting 12 March, this brand new course covers everything from the basics of creating a Web application that runs on mobile devices all the way to packaging it up for distribution. In the process, it looks at novel CSS properties, HTML5 elements, powerful Javascript APIs and libraries, and covers all the important aspects of mobile Web application development.

February 2012 edition of “Standards for Web Applications on Mobile”

As Mobile World Congress draws near (W3C will have a booth there, come and say hi if you’re around), I have just released an update to the quaterly Standards for Web Applications on Mobile.

This February 2012 edition features for the first time detailed information on which mobile browser implements what specification, based on data collected from existing on-line sources and computed into simple graphics via a simple tool.

The document also has the latest information about the status of specifications, their expected evolution, the state of their accompanying test suites, etc.

A number of the technologies the document covers will be at the core of the new on-line training course: Mobile Web 2: Applications, scheduled to start on March 12, and for which early bird rates end on March 1st — a perfect opportunity to explore these technologies in a lot more details!

W3C Mobile Web tutorial @ WWW2012

At this year’s 21th International World Wide Web Conference – WWW2012, W3C organizes a W3C tutorial track over two days, on Monday 16 and Tuesday 17 April 2012.

Half-day tutorials from leading experts will be available to researchers and developers seeking to pick up new skills on the latest developments on W3C Web standards.

One of these W3C tutorials will be about “Developing Mobile Web Applications” and will be taught by Dominique Hazaël-Massieux (W3C Mobile Web Activity Lead) and Frances de Waal (W3DevCampus trainer for the Mobile Web and Application Best Practices online training course). The tutorial informations are summarized below:

New “startup level” for W3C Membership

Part of the goals of our MobiWebApp project is to help more European SMEs get involved in the standardization work around Web applications on mobile devices.

As a result, we’ve been pushing for the adoption of a new W3C Membership level targeted at small enterprises, which W3C just announced is now available to any company with less than 10 employees, less than 2.25M Euros of gross revenues and has never been a W3C Member before.

The fee for most Europe-based companies is at 1950€ (as can be verified in the W3C fees calculator), making it a great opportunity for small business that would like to help shape the future standards of the Web. Don’t miss it!
